Training
Professional Education
Providing training opportunities for the Latino community is a top priority for Redes En Acción. Cancer research opportunities are available for Latino junior faculty, pre/post-doctoral individuals, and undergraduate trainees. To date, Redes has provided mentoring and training to more than 165 individuals, from undergraduates through early career development.
- Opportunities for supported cancer research fellowships are also available. At least four junior faculty members (those who have completed doctoral training within the past six years) will be selected/chosen to participate in pilot projects, perform collaborative research with network partners, develop a grant proposal or write a scientific manuscript of selected topics. For more information, click on this link to download Junior Faculty Fellowship Guidelines for Latino junior faculty who aspire to careers as cancer researchers through Redes En Acción (document available in Adobe Acrobat portable document format - PDF).
- Each of the Regional Network Centers has developed a cancer resource directory that is used to pair pre-and post- doctoral individuals with ongoing research projects targeting cancer in Latino populations.
- Each of our Regional Network Centers also recruits at least four student interns to assist project leaders in program-related activities.

Other Training Opportunities
Regionally, opportunities have arisen through Redes En Acción activities for training of students and individuals involved in cancer control activities. In the Latino Council on Alcohol and Tobacco (LCAT) Leadership Project, coordinated with Redes En Acción Regional Network Centers, more than 350 key stakeholders in Hispanic cancer control around the country engaged in leadership development and tobacco and alcohol control agenda establishment in their respective communities. In the Redes Southwest Region, the Redes En Acción and Science Enrichment Program Partnership has exposed hundreds of Latino high school students to subjects in science and cancer research. Also, in the Redes South Central Region, a new program trained 20 fourth-year medical students at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio to serve as community "cancer ambassadors," providing cancer information to patients, the media and the general public.
Providing Latino individuals with resourceful information necessary to pursue a career in cancer research is another high priority for Redes En Acción. Please see the Links page for more information on training prospects, as the sites listed there are particularly helpful for those who are looking for a training opportunity related to Latino health.
